There are many books Doulas and Midwives highly recommend. My favorite is, The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer, publisher TarcherPerigee; Revised ed. edition (August 1, 1999).

Any parent will tell you, every single person has an opinion on every single thing a parent does, thinks, says, heck, even dreams. It is pretty much impossible to get through an entire day without someone dolling out some advise you didn't ask for when it comes to how to be the best parent for your kids.  ... cont.

The average version of pregnancy guide books will scare you half to death. They are heavy on what to be afraid of and short on support. There is little in them that teaches you to trust your body, that it knows what it is doing. Yes, there can be complications in pregnancy and birth, but the majority are perfectly simple, normal.
